New Travel Insurance Ratings Put Value Ahead of Price Alone

What Australian travellers should check before relying on a low-cost policy

New Travel Insurance Ratings Put Value Ahead of Price Alone?w=400

Canstar's latest travel insurance ratings have given Australian travellers another reminder that the cheapest policy is not always the best fit for a trip.
With international holidays, cruises, domestic breaks and multi-destination itineraries all carrying different risks, the latest assessment reinforces the importance of weighing price against the practical strength of the cover.

For travellers, it may be worth considering that a low premium may look attractive at checkout, but the policy wording determines what happens when something goes wrong. Medical emergencies, cancellation costs, missed connections, luggage issues and rental vehicle excess can all be treated differently from one insurer to another. Limits, sub-limits and exclusions can also vary widely, particularly for activities, natural disasters, pre-existing medical conditions and trips affected by official travel warnings.

The ratings also arrive at a time when many Australians are trying to manage higher travel costs. Airfares, accommodation and tours can already stretch a holiday budget, which makes it tempting to cut back on insurance. However, value-conscious travellers should be careful not to confuse a cheaper upfront price with better overall protection. The more useful question is whether the policy matches the destination, traveller profile and likely out-of-pocket exposure.

Families may need to check how dependants are covered, whether cancellation limits are high enough for multiple travellers, and how lost luggage is assessed. Seniors should pay close attention to age limits, medical screening requirements and whether existing conditions must be declared before cover applies. Frequent flyers may also need to consider whether annual cover provides better value than buying separate single-trip policies, while still checking maximum trip duration limits.

Before buying, travellers should review the Product Disclosure Statement, not just the headline benefit table. Key questions may include:

  • Are overseas medical and hospital expenses covered adequately for the destination?
  • Does cancellation cover begin from the purchase date or only once the trip starts?
  • Are valuables, phones and laptops subject to item limits?
  • Are cruises, snow sports, scooters or adventure activities excluded unless an add-on is selected?
  • What evidence will be needed if a claim is lodged?

The latest ratings are best used as a starting point, not a substitute for checking suitability. Travellers can use them to shortlist strong performers, then compare travel insurance options against their own plans. Reading the policy wording before departure remains one of the simplest ways to avoid disappointment at claim time.

For Australian travellers, the message is clear: good travel insurance is not just about finding a recognisable brand or the lowest premium. It is about choosing cover that is likely to respond when the trip does not go to plan.

Fresh attention on cyber incidents across Australian businesses is a timely warning for restaurants, cafés and takeaway operators. Hospitality venues may not always see themselves as data-heavy businesses, but modern food service increasingly depends on connected systems: point-of-sale terminals, booking platforms, delivery apps, QR ordering, loyalty databases, rostering tools and cloud accounting. - read more

Why Fatigue Management Is Again a Truck Insurance Issue
26 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
Recent heavy vehicle compliance activity has again put fatigue management near the top of the risk agenda for Australian transport operators. While enforcement is usually framed as a road safety issue, it also has a direct insurance dimension. Insurers assessing truck insurance risk increasingly look beyond the vehicle itself and ask how well the business controls driver behaviour, scheduling pressure, maintenance downtime and record-keeping. - read more

APRA’s latest general insurance data has again highlighted a point many Australian tradies are already feeling at renewal time: a healthier insurance sector does not necessarily translate into simple or immediate premium relief for small businesses. While insurers continue to operate with stronger capital buffers and improved underwriting discipline, the costs sitting behind many policies remain under pressure. - read more

What Claims Complaint Trends Mean for Salon Insurance

Fresh complaints reporting from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority has put insurance service standards back under the microscope, with claim delays, communication issues and disputed outcomes continuing to feature in the wider financial services complaints landscape. For beauty salon owners, skin clinics, nail technicians and mobile beauticians, the lesson is practical: the moment a loss occurs is not the best time to discover that records are incomplete, policy wording is unclear or a treatment has not been properly disclosed. - read more

New South Wales insurance buyers may be heading for an important change as reform of the Emergency Services Levy continues to attract attention across the insurance sector.
