In response to escalating piracy incidents, CFC has unveiled an upgraded marine kidnap and ransom (K&R) insurance solution that incorporates in-house vessel smart-tracking technology.
This advancement aims to assist shipowners in mitigating coverage gaps when navigating high-risk areas.

The newly introduced system monitors insured vessels in real time, detecting imminent entries into designated high-risk zones. Upon such detection, clients receive automatic alerts and can opt to activate additional coverage immediately, with any extra premiums calculated and billed subsequently. This proactive approach addresses longstanding challenges in the marine K&R market, where coverage for piracy hotspots often relied on time-limited or voyage-specific extensions, leading to uncertainties about protection during critical moments.

CFC's enhanced marine K&R policy offers worldwide coverage, with additional premiums applicable when a vessel enters a restricted area. Throughout the policy period, the insurer tracks participating vessels and issues automatic notifications upon detecting imminent entry into such zones. Policyholders then have the option to add immediate cover, with any additional premiums payable quarterly in arrears. CFC manages the associated administration, streamlining the process for clients.

This development underscores the growing utilisation of real-time tracking and digital tools to manage dynamic marine exposures. It also highlights the ongoing pressure on insurers and intermediaries to prevent coverage gaps as piracy patterns, conflict zones, and geopolitical risks evolve. Alexander Beaton, team leader for kidnap, war, and piracy at CFC, emphasised the objective of simplifying the marine K&R placement process for brokers, particularly for clients operating in or near piracy-prone regions.

Beaton noted that the incidence of piracy at sea is becoming more widespread, with the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Centre recording a 20% increase in piracy events in 2025 compared to 2024. He highlighted that the severity of piracy in key high-risk areas remains significant, as maritime crime continues to be influenced by global instability.

For Australian boat owners and operators, this innovative insurance solution offers a proactive means to manage the risks associated with piracy, ensuring continuous coverage and peace of mind when traversing high-risk regions.
